Cultural Catch Up List
Description:
My cultural catch up list is a compilation of movies, tv shows and songs gathered from a variety of different people of different ages, genders and cultures. The reason form creating this list is so that I can consume this content from different cultures in order to understand more about culture. In order to practice good empathy you must make connections and one of the greatest types of connection is cultural connections. Being able to understand culture better puts me a step closer to being able to understand people better. Therefore, I have created and began checking off boxes on my cultural catch up list.

Reflection
In order to create my cultural catch-up list, I contacted a few people who all have different cultural backgrounds and/or preferences. These people were my dad (a middle-aged male from Ohio), my mom (a middle-aged woman from Minnesota), my grandma (a senior from Ohio), my friend Cooper (a teenage male from Ohio), my girlfriend (a young adult from Ohio), my sister (teenager from Ohio) and then I also participated in the creation of this list. All of these people surround themselves with different people, are raised in different ways, and have their own cultural interests. My next step in making my cultural catch-up list was to ask all of these individuals questions that pertained to each category. For movies, I asked everyone, "What do you think are a few of the most influential movies of all time, and what is your favorite movie of all time." For TV shows, I asked, "What were some of the most popular TV shows you and others around you have watched." Then, for songs, I asked, "What were some of the most popular songs when you were growing up that you listened to, and what are some of your favorite songs of all time." After asking these, I had to bug a few people to get the answer, but ultimately I got a lot of different responses that helped to create my cultural catch-up lists. Once I had them made, I looked over them and realized I had watched and heard about only one-third of what was on my list. In order to get up to speed on movies and TV, I began to watch movies and shows every night before bed if I had time. Some of my personal favorites from the movies and shows I got to were Fight Club, Dukes of Hazzard, and The Sopranos. Now, when it came to music, in order to get caught up, I created a playlist, and every day when walking to class, which typically is a fifteen-minute walk, I would throw the playlist on. I have listened to every song on the playlist now and have been adding songs throughout the process that I believe fit. The first song added, Gimme Shelter, actually is the name of the house I live in now. Some of the songs that I had not heard before that I now enjoy and listen to on the regular are Redemption Song and All Along the Watchtower. I am far from done checking off songs, movies, and shows, but this is a good start. I will definitely continue to watch the shows and movies to get a better understanding of culture as a whole, and I think it is good because it will provide more things to relate to with people, whether they be clients, partners, or friends in the future.
