Personal Best Leadership Experience
Description: Personal best leadership experience is a story about a time in my life that I feel was my personal best in terms of leadership, and how I learned from this experience.
My personal best leadership experience that I can remember recently, excluding my appointed roles through my fraternity and sports, was on a Friday night last Fall. My friends and I all decided to go uptown and get some drinks as most students do on the weekends. We all went to a couple bars and the half of the group decided to head back to hangout. I went with that group and one of my fraternity brothers Mac decided to stay with the group that didn't go home. An hour or so passed after we all split ways and I was sitting on the patio of my house with the group of friends that decided to leave. Suddenly, my friend Mac comes walking around the corner with his face covered in blood. Apparently, someone in Oxford that night went on a rampage and jumped a handful of bar-goers uptown. Mac clearly needed to go to the hospital, but at the time he was my friend but we weren't that close. In my mind there were at least three other people who were closer and/or more sober than I was. However, nobody wanted to take him because everyone was underage and were scared about getting in trouble. He obviously was both upset and under the influence, and probably shouldn’t have been going alone. When he asked, nobody on the patio said they would go with him including me, but something inside of me got me up and ready to take him. I'm not sure if it was compassion, a sense of loyalty to my new brother or just knowing I wouldn’t want to go alone, but I went with him. We got there and I helped him check in and then waited in the lobby until they called me back. For the next two hours we sat there and just talked while the doctors took care of him and the police took his statement. After the hospital we just went home and went to bed, and I really didn't think anything of it. However, the next day Mac approached me and told me how grateful he was that someone went with him. He said he’d never admit it but he was scared to go alone, and I would be too. Up until this assignment I never really considered this a leadership experience, but after considering it I think it is. I think that this experience taught me that sometimes leadership isn’t always a huge motivation act, or a position people voted you into. I think that leadership is just showing up and doing it when nobody else wants to. I think that's an important thing to remember especially when working in a group. Not only did I learn a little bit about leadership from this experience, but now Mac is one of my closest friends. I am very thankful that I helped him out that day, because it not only taught me about being a leader but it helped create a strong friendship.
Personal Values
Description: Values are traits that I practice everyday and are very important to who I am as a person. In life everything that I do should reflect my personal values.
Respect:
-Being respectful towards others no matter who they are or where they have come from. However, lack of respect towards me or others will lead to me limiting interaction with them.
Love:
-The feeling of loving and being loved gets me through my day, week, month and year. I love hard as it is a big part of my life, but sometimes it gets the best of me.
Competition:
-I love to compete whether it is with friends, family or strangers. However, I feel I need to be in a semi comfortable situation in order to fully complete.
Adventure:
-I enjoy experiencing new things and going out to explore the world around me. I also love to adventure with people.
Curiosity:
-I often find myself interested in things that are new to me or that I have little knowledge in, however sometimes I find it hard to ask.
I would say that my voice is positive as I try to be positive about most things in my life. It also goes along with my two most important values which are respect and love. In life I believe that by showing respect and love to others around you that you can positively impact their lives. It also positively impacts my day when I make others around me feel loved and respected. I feel as if these two traits contribute and go well with the positive voice that I have.

Personal Envision
Description: My personal envision is a vision for the future five years from now and helps me to see what steps I need to take now and in the next few years in order to achieve what I want in life.
It has been five years since I took Dr. Friedman's ESP252, and I am now a 26-year-old entrepreneur. I live on a nice piece of land in a white house thirty minutes outside Cleveland, Ohio. My wife, Sarah, and I live there with our one daughter, Vienna, and our first son, Richie, is on the way. I love spending time with my growing family, but I am nervous about having more than one kid. Even though Sarah and I have Vienna, I still feel I am far from qualified to be a parent. Work-wise, things are starting to go well for my partners and me at 419 Discount LLC. We have successfully built a business where customers can trade in their phones for cash. We take these phones and distribute them to used phone retailers, phone repair companies, and liquidation companies. We have worked countless hours with countless clients, mentors, and partners to build the business that it is today. Through the past years, there have been ups and many downs; however, I have always had mountains of support from my wife, my partners, and my extended family. I have had to make many sacrifices, including my time, personal funds, and sometimes the happiness of myself and my wife, in order to help the business grow. Up to this point, I have worked with my two partners, Aiden and Noah; however, Aiden and I have decided to get involved with a new partnership opportunity. He and I are helping found an entrepreneurial incubator and support program in Toledo, Ohio, in order to help boost the economy within the deteriorated city. We are collaborating with multiple other founders to help build a program to bring Toledo back. I decided to make this move not only work-wise but also living-wise to Toledo to help my hometown grow economically and become a place where young people want to move to and start their own businesses.
As I mentioned earlier, I love spending time with my family. I use the weekends as days when I can make fun memories with them. Recently, we have been very interested in renting Airbnbs on lakes across the region. Although we're young, Vienna loves the water, and Sarah and I love the lake and relaxing a little bit. During the week, I spend a lot of my free time learning new songs on my new Taylor guitar, which I bought recently, and perfecting how to cook with Sarah. I used to love going out with my friends and partners; however, I have felt a shift in wanting to be a great father. It feels like the more I learn about being a father, the more I learn about life in general and being a human. I am very excited for the upcoming years as I discover more about myself, my family, and my upcoming business endeavors.

Reflection
Throughout the process of our leadership assignments, I felt like my perspective on life has changed, as well as my perspective of leadership as well. I'll start with how it changed my perspective on leadership and my perspective on the assignments in general. Before this class, I felt that leadership was a position you almost always had to get elected into or chosen for. That's why, for me, it was extremely hard to think of my personal best leadership experience just because all I could think of was my elected leadership positions. In my opinion, leadership was shown in two ways through: direct leadership and indirect leadership. Direct leadership to me was hands-on things or inspirational words, and indirect was leading by example. However, after doing the leadership assignments and learning about leadership in class, I realized I could not have been more wrong. I now believe that leadership is about fully caring about others and enabling them to do what they love. I have learned that this is done through just simply paying attention and asking questions. To be a leader, you have to be able to notice what other people do well and encourage them to do those things. It is also done through asking people what they want and what they think. In my eyes, leaders help the people around them grow and excel in the things they are interested in. The second perspective that has changed for me is my perspective on life. This class has been very eye-opening for me on the basis of what I want out of how and how I am going to get there. In my mind, I have always had a loose idea of what I wanted, but I have never set a goal. Through the leadership activities, I have been forced to set exact and specific goals that I want for the future. Being able to see that laid out has motivated me more than anything before. It has also made me think about the steps I need to get there and the things that are holding me back. Fortunately, I have been able to see what is holding me back, and I have either cut them or am in the process of cutting them out of my life. Through doing these leadership assignments, I feel like I have also been led in the process. I feel like I have been inspired and enabled to do the things that are important to me. In my opinion, these assignments have been the most important to me.
